What Is A PhD Dissertation Problem Statement: A Detailed Manual

A dissertation is, basically, a detailed account regarding a particular topic- what the topic involves, what it deals with, the specific problems that the author is trying to draw attention to, how he or she plans to remedy the, his or her final thoughts and opinions on the matter, a detailed analysis concerning the issue- this is what it deals with. They are mainly, though not always, written by doctoral candidates as part of their curriculum, with the best ones being published and garnering acclaim for the author.

Meaning of a problem statement

A problem statement is that part of the dissertation paper that tells the reader the issue being tackled by the author in the paper that they are about to read. It is a more elaborate version of the title and explains to the readers what it means and involves. It is often mistaken for the introduction, and, although quite similar to one another, there are subtle differences between the two, the most distinguished one being that the problem statement is a more technical and formal interpretation.

Things to include in the statement

The problem statement consists of some of the most vital components of the paper. These include:

Length of the statement

The name itself is quite self-explanatory. The author must keep in mind that this portion is basically his opening statement on the matter and not the entire account. Brevity is key, in this case. This portion of the paper should never exceed a page and a half, or the thesis may be judged as being of inferior quality.

Research work to be included

The statement portion should also include a brief account of how the author went about conducting the research work, required to aid his paper. Just a few lines on this matter is more than enough. The author need not delve into the deep-seated technicalities of the procedure. However, whether the bulk of the research depends on primary or secondary data should be mentioned.
